The comfort and neck support of your pillow can influence how well you sleep.

  • If you sleep on your side, having enough height to bridge the gap created by your shoulder is important to help maintain a neutral neck position in relation to your trunk.
  • If you sleep on your back, having a pillow that supports the natural curve of the neck is most important. Additionally, having the correct height for your neck shape is important so that your head is not pushed forward by the pillow or forced to reach for the pillow. Adjustable pillows can support your head if you find the other aspects of the pillow comfortable.
  • While sleeping on your stomach is generally not recommended due to the need to sleep with your head rotated, some people feel forced to sleep on their stomach out of habit. In this case, consider using a short-height pillow to avoid having your neck extended while rotated.

This can cause neck pain. Consider sitting upright, leaning against a “husband pillow,” a pillow that supports your back and has arms that can wrap around and further support you.

Changing out or washing pillows every so often can also improve your sleep quality. Pillows can trap dust and other allergens that may disturb your nasal passages at night.
