Marilyn Manson drops lawsuit against Evan Rachel Wood

  • By ANDREW DALTON - AP Entertainment Writer

Rocker Marilyn Manson has agreed to drop a lawsuit against his former fiancée, “Westworld” actor Evan Rachel Wood. In the 2022 lawsuit, Manson had sued Wood in 2022, alleging she had fabricated public allegations that he sexually and physically abused her during their relationship and encouraged other women to do the same. A judge threw out much of the lawsuit last year, and the two sides have now agreed to dismiss the rest of it. Manson also agreed to pay more than $300,000 in attorneys fees for Wood. Manson remains under criminal investigation by Los Angeles County prosecutors. He has denied ever engaging in non-consensual sexual acts.

Pilot who rescued animals all over the country dies in crash. 2 of his canine passengers survived

  • By JENNIFER PELTZ - Associated Press

When Seuk Kim took off last weekend with three small dogs aboard his small plane, it was the latest of many volunteer flights he had made to rescue animals in need. But the flight from Maryland to New York would be his last. Kim’s plane crashed Sunday in the snowy woods of the Catskill Mountains. Authorities say the 49-year-old pilot died. The other two pups survived and were recovering Tuesday. One is a 4-month-old Labrador-mix named Whisky who was found huddled in the snow with two broken legs. The other dog is an 18-month-old Yorkshire terrier mix called Pluto, who was found Monday with minor injuries.

Australia's House of Representatives passes bill that would ban young children from social media

  • By ROD McGUIRK - Associated Press

Australia’s House of Representatives has passed a bill that would ban children younger than 16 years from social media. That leaves it to the Senate to take the next step in finalizing the world-first law. The major parties on Wednesday backed the bill that would make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent young children from holding accounts. If the bill becomes law this week, the platforms would have one year to work out how to implement the age restrictions before the penalties are enforced.

Nebraska judge's ruling edges the state closer to legalizing medical marijuana

A judge’s ruling moved Nebraska one step closer to legalizing medical marijuana. At issue was whether proponents followed the law in gathering signatures to put legalization on the Nov. 5 ballot. The decision by Lancaster County District Judge Susan Strong was a victory for advocates of medical marijuana, but opponents are likely to appeal it to the state Supreme Court. More than two-thirds of Nebraska voters supported legalization at the polls Nov. 5 and those results are scheduled to be certified on Dec. 2.

A look at the Israel-Hezbollah war, by the numbers

  • By JULIA FRANKEL and ABBY SEWELL - Associated Press

Israel has agreed to a ceasefire with Lebanon-based Hezbollah militants after nearly 14 months of cross-border fire that has dealt a heavy blow to both countries. The ceasefire starts early Wednesday and calls for a two-month initial halt in fighting and would require Hezbollah to end its armed presence in a broad swath of southern Lebanon, while Israeli troops would return to their side of the border. But implementation remains a major question mark. More than 3,700 people have been killed in Lebanon, dozens in Israel. Here’s a look at the conflict by the numbers.

Kentucky attorney general targets another big pharmacy benefit manager in opioid-related lawsuit

  • By BRUCE SCHREINER - Associated Press

Kentucky’s attorney general has expanded an opioid-related lawsuit to target another pharmacy benefit manager. Attorney General Russell Coleman says OptumRx contributed to the state’s deadly addiction crisis. OptumRx was added as a defendant in the suit filed two months ago against Express Scripts, another pharmacy benefit manager that remains a defendant. The attorney general accused Optum of playing a central role in what he calls the reckless promotion, dispensing and oversupply of opioids. Optum didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment Tuesday. Kentucky was at the center of the addiction crisis with some of the nation’s highest overdose death rates.

The company did not disclose the subject of the request or respond to an inquiry. Evolv has faced prior legal scrutiny. Last month, its board fired the company CEO following an investigation into allegations of sales misconduct. New York City has paused the pilot program as it evaluates the results.

Southwest states certify election results after the process led to controversy in previous years

  • By CHRISTINA A. CASSIDY - Associated Press

The states that saw the most active attacks against election certification two years ago certified the results of this year’s races without controversy this week, prompting the Arizona secretary of state to proclaim that “election denialism” is a thing of the past. Others said they weren’t so sure. Certification proceeded normally this year in part because Donald Trump won the presidential race, quieting his supporters after he had spent the campaign making unsubstantiated claims that he could lose only through widespread cheating. The statewide certification votes Tuesday in Nevada and New Mexico follow a vote Monday to certify the results in Arizona.

J.K. Dobbins' knee injury could be tough news for the Chargers offense

Losing to older brother John Harbaugh and seeing the Los Angeles Chargers' four-game winning streak snapped Monday night might be the least of Jim Harbaugh’s problems this week. The Chargers are holding their breath that running back J.K. Dobbins isn’t seriously hurt after he left with a knee injury late in the first half of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Harbaugh, who dislikes discussing injuries and eschews questions about any player’s status with the tried and true “I’m not a doctor” answer, will get plenty of inquiries about Dobbins’ health this week.

Walmart's DEI rollback signals a profound shift in the wake of Trump's election victory

Walmart’s sweeping rollback of its diversity policies is the strongest indication yet of a profound shift taking hold at U.S. companies that are revaluating the legal and political risks associated with bold programs to bolster historically underrepresented groups in business. The risk associated with some of programs crystalized with the election of former President Donald Trump, whose administration is certain to make dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion programs a priority.

UN Resolution 1701 is at the heart of the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire deal. What is it?

  • By KAREEM CHEHAYEB - Associated Press

In 2006, the U.N. Security Council voted for a resolution to end a bruising monthlong conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah militant group, and pave the way for lasting security along the border. There was relative calm for nearly two decades, but Resolution 1701’s terms were never fully enforced. Now, figuring out how to finally enforce it is key to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal approved by Israel on Tuesday. U.N. and diplomatic officials turned to the 2006 resolution in a bid to end the conflict. Years of divided politics and regionwide geopolitical hostilities halted substantial progress on its implementation, yet the international community believes Resolution 1701 is still the brightest prospect for long-term stability between Israel and Lebanon.

What to know about ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah

  • By ADAM GELLER - Associated Press

A ceasefire deal that could end more than a year of cross-border fighting between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group won backing from Israeli leaders. The truce that is set to take effect early Wednesday raised hopes and renewed difficult questions in a region gripped by conflict. Hezbollah leaders also signaled tentative backing for the U.S.-brokered deal, which offers both sides an off-ramp from hostilities But the deal does little directly to resolve the much deadlier war that has raged in Gaza since Hamas militants attacked southern Israel last October.

Drake makes another legal move against Universal over Kendrick Lamar diss track 'Not Like Us'

  • By ANDREW DALTON - AP Entertainment Writer

Drake has taken legal action against Universal Music Group for the second straight day in his feud with fellow hip-hop superstar Kendrick Lamar. The new filing in Texas alleges that UMG, the parent company of the labels for both artists, engaged in pay-to-play to get radio air time for the Lamar diss track “Not Like Us.” The song from earlier this year viciously attacks Drake, who says in the court petition that he could file a defamation lawsuit. UMG did not immediately reply to a request for comment. After a similar filing in New York on Monday, the company called Drake's allegations “offensive and untrue.”
